The legality of RIPing your DVDs could vary from country to country, in the US it is legal to make backup copies, check the laws that apply to you before beginning any experiments My original post: Handbrake, MakeMKV and VLC are extremely popular software, each one is superior in its area of specialty but there is a lot of confusion on when to use them and how to make them work.It appears that Handbrake 1.3 broke and does not look for the needed libraries in its usual location, so as an experiment, for educational purposes, I dug into it to see if I could spot the problem, and yes, the correct answer follows, so be sure tread the entire post.History of RIPing and Compressing DVDs Essentially what happens is that users who want to RIP (copy) DVDs to their hard drive, for legitimate backup purposes, find that Handbrake will not RIP anymore because it lost that ability years ago.
Makemkv Temporary Key How To Make ThemMakemkv Temporary Key Movie To TakeHandbrake is much loved because you can compress the movie to take up much less disk space and at the same time it will produce an MPEG4 format file that can be read by all popular players now, since MPEG4 is an international standard. That makes Handbrake extremely convenient but to enable it to work today you must drop off certain specific library files into your Macs file system. Its not rocket science but it does take a small about of skill to understand where to drop the files off. Once these library files have been dropped off in the correct locations then when Handbrake runs, it automatically looks for those files to handle DVDs, what Handbrake does not know is that those libraries will automatically remove encryption and hand a perfectly usable copy of the movie to Handbrake, at which time Handbrake can apply the compression you selected and then output it as an MPEG4 file. Easy As Pie. Todays Problem That worked well enough but by the time that Handbrake version 1.3.0 came out I was informed that Handbrake was no longer processing DVDs, being the consummate researcher and experimenter I set up a test machine and sure enough Handbrake threw an error message. That is when I had a moment of epiphany (not the religious kind, the techie geeky kind LOL) and recalled how in one past Handbrake breakdown incident that frightened everyone. It turned out that Apple had changed the permissions of system directories so that we could experience better security and of course that was the exact location where everyone had dropped the library software into. Realizing that those dot rectories actually have a counterpart in each user account (its a UNIX thing) I simply moved the library files to the directory with no security impact and it worked, Handbrake did look in the alternate directory all by itself and that problem, years ago, was solved. The memory of that event light the figurative light bulb over my head and I looked at the other possible directories that could work. Eureka It turned out that when I dropped the library files into: usrlocallib actual worked You only need drop the one library file into it for DVDs (I have not tested Blue-ray discs yet but if they fail then I will drop the Blu-ray library files here as well) so now you have usrlocalliblibdvdcss.2.dylib when you are finished. If there are any other glitches in the future then drop off all the other library files here as well. What I found odd was that when I dropped an alias of the library into the usrlocallib directory that Handbrake would not work, it still threw the error message up and then did nothing. I deleted the alias and put an actual duplicate of the original library file there and then Handbrake did work well. I dont really know why Handbrake glitched out, I performed numerous searches and did not see anyone post a reason. It certainly was not anything to do with macOS Catalina 10.15 because it had worked just fine previously, yet it did not seem to coincide precisely with the Handbrake 1.0.3 update either. Its all rather odd. I dont know why the usrlocallib directory works because we werent using it in the past but since it works, we are thankful and will just move on. The Essence Essentially the process to enable Handbrake is simple. It is slightly technical but only if you are inexperienced with finding various locations of elders (directories) on your Mac. Makemkv Temporary Key Free From TheCertain library files, available for free from the Internet, simply need to be downloaded and placed in the exact directory (folder) that Handbrake is looking for them at. Thats it You then simply launch Handbrake, insert your DVD, select the DVD from inside Handbrake and use Handbrake normally. Its actually much simpler than it appears to be (various instructions below) but that really is all that you are doing.
